Recipe for Washing Clothes!

oh, for those good old days again. Now count your blessings!

Washing Clothes Recipe

Never thought of a 'washer' in this light before..what a blessing!

' Washing Clothes Recipe' -- imagine having a recipe for this ! ! !

Years ago an Alabama grandmother gave the new bride the following recipe:

This is an exact copy as written and found in an old scrapbook - with spelling errors and all.

WASHING CLOTHES

Build fire in backyard to heat kettle of rain water. Set tubs so smoke wont blow in eyes if wind is pert.

Shave one hole cake of lie soap in boilin water.

Sort things, make 3 piles
1 pile white,
1 pile colored,
1 pile work britches and rags.

To make starch, stir flour in cool water to smooth, then thin down with boiling water.

Take white things, rub dirty spots on board, scrub hard, and boil, then rub colored don't boil just wrench and starch.

Take things out of kettle with broom stick handle, then wrench, and starch.

Hang old rags on fence.

Spread tea towels on grass.

Pore wrench water in flower bed.. Scrub porch with hot soapy water. Turn tubs upside down.

Go put on clean dress, smooth hair with hair combs. Brew cup of tea, sit and rock a spell and count your blessings.
================================================
Paste this over your washer and dryer Next time when you think things are bleak, read it again, kiss that washing machine and dryer, and give thanks. First thing each morning you should run and hug your washer and dryer, also your toilet---those two-holers used to get mighty cold!

For you non-southerners -wrench means rinse. ;)

AND WE THNK WE HAVE IT ROUGH?

When I got to the line about dumping the 'wrench' water in the flower bed, I then realized what wrench meant. Then, as I thought more about it, I recalled hearing my (dearly departed) Nanny calling it 'wrench', too. ;-)

Sounds just like what my Grandmother used to do!!! My Mom said each day of the week had it's purpose...Washday was always on Mondays for them...Really sad when it rained and the Wintertime also...
Happy to see it only in print now...(AND I'm glad I don't have that to look forward to)

My mom had an old wringer washer when I was little and a clothes line....but that recipe is really going back, huh? I just remember all the ironing she had...everything had to be ironed then, even my dad's military uniforms...I know she really struggled with that as they had to be just so for inspection.
We really have it easy now!

Such fun to read. Definitely we are thankful for our washer and dryers!! And all our other conveniences. We are certainly spoiled in this day and age.

Oh I am so glad I have a washer and dryer.. When I was a kid (I'm almost 54 now) I helped my step mom with the wringer washer and hanging on the clothes line.
